Netflix series, Review

Its been about two months since since season three of the Bridgeton serious has premiered, I however keep avoiding it like its leprosy as I fear it would leave me in a state of depression as Queen Charlotte did. three women, two ,men, one a King another queer, all keeping up appearances as they battle loneliness, societal pressures and the burden of existence.

Inciting incident

My relationship with the Bridgeton series began back in 2020 when I saw its first trailer. Sick and tired of living in the masculine energy, I was looking for ways to shed of that masculinity and settle more in the feminine energy as the journey back to self reminded me that I was but a girl. The wardrobe and affluent homes drew my attention as I not only sought the get my women hood but I desired to be a women of affluence. I must say I got to learn a lot as far as etiquette was concerned and through the character of Eloise, played by Claudia Jessie I was quickly reminded of what had landed me in the masculine energy to begin with.

Hoping to learn more about affluent lifestyle I did not hesitate to watch Queen Charlotte of the Bridgeton series that premiered in March of 2022. Never had I been so sad as I concluded the series.

Queen Charlotte

Our main protagonist Queen Charlotte finds herself with the burden of saving her people by being married off to a stranger whom he had never seen. She is upset and sad as she journeys from Germany with her brother to England. her fate decided she does like that she has to dress up to impress the British and is skeptical about the reason for being chosen. She tries to escape her fate by climbing off the wall of the palace and soon changes her mind upon meeting the King who appears to be prince charming. True to her suspicion, the is King is mentally ill and Queen Charlotte’s lonely life begins immediately after her wedding when the King makes them live in two separate homes. The loneliness that Queen Charlotte suffers is so great that we old Queen Charlotte seemingly disappointed when her servants inform he that the King is not dead, but her great grand daughter.

While she may have loved her King, which could be seconded by her perseverance, desire to support her and carry out his duties, his death could perhaps bring to her an opportunity to fall in love again and rid her off the loneliness. because of the King’s condition, Queen Charlotte ends end up neglecting her children as she concentrates on the King. in the end, the relationship with her children is strained and they let her know of her neglect as she demands a heir.

In the end we see her happy running to the King to share news of a royal her heir in what seems to be the climax of her entire existence. The King who seems to be in the worst state welcomes the news, and thanks her for choosing to stay instead of climbing over the wall. “Vanity of vanity” I found myself saying. The end did the means no justice. how could all Queen Charlotte had been through build up for this one lame thing?

Lady Agatha Danbury

Married to an old man that she clearly despised, hers is a marriage that was arranged at a time when she was about three years old. She endures being ridden like a donkey during sexual intercourse and dares to revile her intelligence for the ego of her husband. She celebrates his death, but her excitement is short lived as the 18th century was designed to with the interests of women at its core. Not only does she learn her husband left her with almost nothing, she has to fight for her title by trying to get her son to inherit the title or marriage to another man. it is only when Queen Charlotte’s brother offers her his hand in marriage that Lady Danbury realizes that she does not want to be married anymore. Thankfully, in the Queen gives her the title.

While I am not the one to encourage extra marital affairs, I found myself wishing that the romance between Lady Danbury and Lord Ledger, who happens to be Mrs Bridgeton’s father could have lingered a bit longer. While she claims to have heard other love interest it is clear she only experience true romance with Lord Ledger. Vanity of vanity, dry days surpassed wet days. what is the point of living, with but a little romance?

Mrs Bridgeton

You would think after what I have mentioned above the story of miss Bridgeton would improve my mood. Well, perhaps envy got the better of me. Married to a man to whom she was well pleased with and blessed with riches and children Mrs Bridgeton has successfully marries off two of her as apposed to the Queen who literally forces her children to the alter.

Her luck in love seems to overflow to her children. while she too is in the same boat of loneliness, her loneliness is sort of self imposed as moving on feels like cheating. A betrayal to her husband whom she loved dearly. having experienced love from her father and husband, she believes love to be the foundation of marriage which makes her oblivious of two other women’s circumstances. In the end she decides to do away with loneliness by giving love another chance. “Vanity of vanity, why cant the blessing of love fall an everyone?” It is my hope for her is that she is lucky a third time.

King George

I couldn’t but to crush on the young King Corey Mylchreest played by when he appeared for the first time by Charlotte escape site. If I too was Queen Charlotte, I wouldn’t have escaped, on the contrary I would throw my family a thanksgiving party. King George however like most beautiful things comes with baggage. Born to a position of power, he is faced with the burden of living for the misery and happiness of the British empire, and his mental/nervous condition is a weakness which he must hide. although in love with his bride, he isolates himself to hide his condition, leaving poor Queen Charlotte to suspect he is not in love with her.

through the story of the King we learn how detrimental lack of communication could be in marriage as Queen Charlotte ends up in a state of depression and begins sharing matters of her marriage with her ladies in waiting as well as her family. King George, or Farmer George as he preferers to be called suffers in silence leaving Charlotte to discover the matter herself. In the end it is Queen Charlotte’s intelligence and tenacity that saves their marriage.

Brimsely the Queen’s manservant

The Bridgeton series highlights a huge number of issues through its such as the absence of active parenting in affluent families, and through the supporting cast the issue of race and segregation and the notion that hurt people like Princess Augusta tend to hurt others. I was particularly drawn to the character of Brimsely Queen Charlotte’s manservant. His dedication to his Queen reminded me of the saying “Be the love you wish to be.” Within his busy schedule, he finds romance with the King’s manservant …..who appears to be the only other person that mattered in his life. his service goes beyond duty, we see Brimsely empathizes with his Queen throughout the series to the point of demanding a love gesture to be arranged for the Queen by her King George. His life is that of service and i must say both Brimselys did justice to their role and I felt their emotions.

“Vanity of vanity, in a world where only a few reciprocate love, Imagine being born only to the purpose of service!”

Resolution

I must though I did enjoy the wardrobe like always and liked the way which the directors put the story together. If you thinking of watching the series I suggest you do it with someone with a little bit of intelligence as slow learners will annoy you with failure to understand subtext and the two different time zone setting edits. While the story represents pretty much the reality of our society, it is not for the faint hearted and I will thus not recommend it to someone seeking an escape.

So tell me, have you watched season three of the series? On a scale of one to ten how likely is it to tip my depression?

Please share your thoughts so I can prepare my mind,
